If you’re looking for a baby gift that is out of the ordinary, a good choice is to look into something on a more personal level. It’s common knowledge that everyone is going to think of crib sheets, blankets, bottles, and other kinds of common gifts, so it may be a little more difficult to find something that deviates from the ordinary. Even the once unique diaper cake has now become so ordinary that it needs an upgrade. Of course, if you are good with crafts and other projects, it is easier than for the person who is not quite so talented.

Choosing a baby gift that you are certain no one else will give is easier if you have more time to prepare. For friends or relatives who know about the impending birth several months in advance the choice is easy, but for those who were notified with nothing more that an invitation to the shower such as co-workers or business associates, the process can be a little more difficult. However, always remember that hand crafted or personalized gifts are always appreciated more than something you go to the store and pick off the shelf. One very unique gift that was mentioned online was that of a mural on the wall in the baby’s room. Instead of buying wall decorations of bunnies, baby animals, or cartoon characters, you can contract with someone to paint the mural for the parents to hang on the wall. It’s unique in a very attractive way and not something most people would think to do.

If you want to wait a while to give your gift, you can certainly present the proud parents with photographs of their pride and joy in a collage that you can personalize with dates. Other possibilities may include some of the following:

A framed imprint of the baby’s footprints denoting the name, date or birth, birth weight, and length at birth.

A silver or gold picture frame that is engraved with all of the information about the baby’s birth.

A personalized pillow with the baby’s pictures and birth details.

If it is close to Christmas, you can choose a decoration and engrave it with the baby’s name and date of birth.

Of course, some of the selections require waiting until after the birth of the baby, but there are many other possibilities you may come across that are perfect selections as gifts different from what others may choose. For those who enjoy embroidery, you can create personalized towels and blankets for the new baby.

For those who enjoy working with pottery or ceramics, making a lamp for baby’s room is a great welcome home gift. The choices are limited only by your imagination and talent. The choices are endless and go far beyond anything you can find in any store. In fact, this is the kind of think you can think of before there is an impending birth and put it in action when the time arrives.

One of the most difficult parts of a relationship is knowing what kinds of gifts are appropriate during certain levels of the relationship. For example, you are not going to buy intimate apparel for a woman you have only begun dating because it may send her signals she is not ready to see or hear. On the same note it impersonal to buy a gift card for someone you have been seeing for quite some time. You have to base the gift you choose based upon where you are within the relationship.

The key to knowing the appropriate gift to buy someone you are seeing is time—in other words, the longer you are involved, the more likely you are to know what to buy. The longer you date, the more informed you will become concerning the type of things someone likes. Some people, for example, do not like others choosing their clothing no matter what it is, and if you know that, do not buy your dating partner a sweater or pair of jeans even if you have been dating for a year. Likewise, do not buy chocolates for someone who is dieting or flowers for someone who is allergic to flowers.

For women, perfume and jewelry are usually always appropriate selections. There may be occasions where a woman will prefer certain fragrances, but you should become aware of this early in the relationship. For men aftershave and cologne are good choices early in the relationship. Certainly both CDs and DVDs are always appropriate and though appreciated, lack the intimacy of gifts one can choose when the relationship is at a greater depth. If you pay attention, you will find it very easy to choose a gift that is not going to send the wrong signals while you are building a relationship.

When choosing a gift for Christmas or a birthday, it’s certainly easy enough to simply ask for suggestions, but if you want to give something for no reason, you will have to look for signs. You may have to watch things such as the following:

The kind of music your partner likes

The jewelry he or she likes to wear

Is there a certain kind of candy or flowers he or she seems to prefer

What fragrance does he or she use?

What kind of movies does he or she like? Is there a particular movie that has been mentioned as missing from the collection?

It is quite easy to choose a gift even early in a relationship if you allow yourself to pay attention to the other person. You have to know when the relationship has reached the point where more intimate gifts are appropriate or you may cause discomfort for your partner. For example, do not buy under garments unless you are sharing a bed and only if it is acceptable to your partner—some women, for example, do not like men buying them undergarments under any circumstances. Choosing gifts that are too personal too early in the relationship can destroy it before it begins.

When it’s time to choose a gift for graduation, it can be difficult if you don’t have a list of things that are desired or needed. The list can vary depending upon whether the graduation is high school or college and what the plans are following graduation. For the high school graduate heading off to college, there can be many different possibilities including a computer laptop, dormitory furnishings, and even a gift card for those college expenses. Of course, for those outside of the family some gifts may be out of their price range, but a little help from the parents and the graduate can solve the problem.

Graduation gifts tend to be gifts the graduate can take to college or into his or her career. Of course, that doesn’t mean gifts of cash are not welcome because that is never a problem with young men and women at any age. If the gift choices are high end and don’t fit your budget, you can choose to share in a gift with some others who are also looking for someone to share the cost or you can select a gift card or certificate to the favorite store of the graduate. For the graduate who is going on to further his or her education, a plaque commemorating the present accomplishment is not likely to be something someone else will choose. The problem is not usually choosing a gift but choosing a unique gift.

When choosing a gift for a graduate, you also want to consider the career choice of the graduate. One is going to choose a different gift for a doctor than an accountant, at least if you want to choose a gift that is related to the graduate’s chosen vocation. The choice of your gift should be related directly to your budget, the graduate’s needs, and your relationship to the graduate. For example, one does not expect the same kind of gift from a long term family friend or relative as from a neighbor or friend of the graduate.

One thing you do not want to do is attempt to out do others in the family if you are not a part of that circle. For example, if you are the parents of the graduate’s girlfriend, you do not need to buy an expensive gift unless they have been dating along time and are expected to marry in the future. Choose gifts that are not only appropriate for your budget but for the relationship you hold with the graduate. If you have close ties to the graduate, choose something he or she will appreciate and use for years to come.

Don’t hesitate to buy something necessary—if your graduate is going to college in the mid-West and wants a down jacket, don’t think twice about buying it (after all, it’s cold out there in the winter). You don’t want to choose something that will be tossed into a closet and never removed. Maybe an engraved pen set sounds good to you, but will the graduate really use it? Does he or she want it? These are questions you must ask yourself before you choose a gift.
